A blue 2024 Ford Escape Active is shown angled left.

Compact SUVs dominate a large part of the market, and the Ford Escape is one of them. It competes against some fairly prominent and popular name plates within the industry, such as the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and the Chevy Equinox. However, the Escape ā€“ over the years ā€“ has managed to stand out from the competition with its robust set of features and noteworthy turbocharged powertrain offerings. That still rings true even for the 2024 Ford Escape, with the two-row, five-seater SUV packed with an array of desirable features.

The changes for 2024 are minor, as there has been a slight alteration in the trim line-up, with the starting trim now being the Active instead of the Base, giving you slightly more features as the starting trim as opposed to the outgoing model year’s starting trim. The Active is followed by the ST-Line, the ST-Line Select, the ST-Line Elite, the upscale Platinum, and finally, the Plug-In Hybrid for those seeking an alternative fuel iteration of the popular two-row, five-seater SUV. You have multiple powertrains in multiple drivetrain configurations across multiple trims.

The 2024 model year also carries over other changes introduced with the outgoing model year, such as the stylistic changes made for the ST-Line of trims, including an all-new upscaled interior design, the sports-inspired black mesh grille, and the single-wing elevated rear spoiler. The fascia changes and interior update is accompanied by a robust selection of exterior colors. You have seven different colors to choose from, including Agate Black Metallic, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, Star White Metallic Tri-Coat, Iconic Silver Metallic, Carbonized Gray, Vapor Blue Metallic, and Race Red.

Performance

A silver 2024 Ford Escape is shown towing a boat on a winding road.

The 2024 Ford Escape offers four different powertrain options in two drivetrain configurations. You have the very fuel-efficient front-wheel drive and the more robust and capable all-wheel drive, which includes all-wheel drive disconnect. The feature enables it so that if you want to get the benefit of the fuel-saving opportunities from front-wheel drive with an all-wheel drive configuration, you can use the disconnect feature so that only the front wheels propel the vehicle. When you need extra traction control and maneuvering stability, you can re-engage the rear axles for full all-wheel drive functionality.

Engine Options

With the engine options, you have everything from a fuel-efficient hybrid to a powerful turbocharged EcoBoost. The starting engine is a 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline 3-cylinder that offers 180 hp at 199 lb-ft of torque. You have a slightly more powerful 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that makes 250 hp at 280 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Moving further up the list of powertrain options are the hybrid options, which include the hybrid electric motor and a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder that delivers 192 combined hp. If you wanted more power and performance out of the hybrid Escape, the 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder is available with the plug-in hybrid powertrain that comes with a 14.4 kWh battery pack and electric motor, which makes a combined 210 hp. Both hybrid options for the 2024 Escape are paired with an eCVT, or a hybrid continuously variable transmission. The plug-in hybrid also comes with a Level 1 mobile power cord so that you can charge your Escape with any compatible Level 1 outlet.

Other Performance Enhancements

The Escape is further buffered in the performance category with various wheel options to give you a matched style and handling for the turbocharged powertrains. This ranges from 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels up to 19-inch machined-faced ebony-painted aluminum wheels. All of the trims come with Electronic Traction Control for stability management, as well as Ford’s patented Curve Control, so you have responsive and tight handling, both for bumper-to-bumper traffic or for hugging curves at moderate speeds on wide-open highways.

Convenience

Convenience is a big factor in the 2024 Ford Escape’s offerings. From the exterior utility features to make getting into and out of the Escape easy, such as the power doors and locks, to the standard inclusion of the power liftgate so that you can quickly retrieve and store items very conveniently. Roof rails with available rock rack crossbars make the Escape quite capable when it comes to off-roading. Configurable daytime running lamps make up part of the exterior utilities, with LED headlights, fog lights, and signature lights available on select trims.

Comfort and Convenience Both Inside and Out

You also have unique skid plates available for those who want to venture off-road, which goes hand-in-hand with the all-wheel drive Escape. The fixed intermittent continuous wipers are part of the automated systems that make driving the Escape very convenient, including features like the remote start and intelligent access with push-button start. You have up to eight cup holders sprinkled throughout the cabin for front-row and second-row passengers. Cloth or available partial-vinyl seats are accentuated with heated front rows and available 10-way power driver seat and 6-way power front passenger seat.

Interior Features

You also have a lot of other amenities inside the cabin that make using the Escape feel homey and relaxing, such as the dual coat hooks, driver-side footrest, grab handles for the front passenger and the second row, as well as compartment storage via the center console with a media storage bin. Multiple forms of interior lighting also help with navigation and reading when you need to increase visibility, such as front map lights, second-row dome lights, and Ice Blue instrument panel lighting. Features like the available panoramic vista roof also added an extra layer of luxury appeal to the Escape for those who want to spruce up the interior quality of the compact SUV.

Technology

Buffering the many great features of the 2024 Escape is its tech suite. The infotainment system powered by the SYNC 4 suite provides you with an available 13.2-inch LCD HD capacitive touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility being standard across all of the trims. Smart device connectivity also receives available compatibility with wireless charging, so you can keep your devices charged without any cords.

Connectivity

Additional infotainment functionality includes FordPass connectivity with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot support, enabling you to connect multiple devices to the Ford Escape. You also have the available one-year subscription service with the connectivity of the connected navigation feature, so you can plot a course to your destination and utilize the touchscreen and map apps to quickly and easily navigate to where you need to go.

You can also get to your destination listening to your favorite tunes thanks to the inclusion of the SiriusXM with 360L support for every trim, so you can listen to your favorite music, media apps and playlists from a wide spectrum of different channels available through the SiriusXM service. You can also enjoy the tunes via the available B&O Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker surround sound system.

Ford Co-Pilot360

There are even some nifty accessibility aids in the form of FordPass features that are available with the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite. This provides you with plenty of safety assists and driving aids while on the road, including Auto High-Beam Headlamps, a rear view camera, and a 360-degree camera with split-view so you can easily see what’s within the immediate proximity of the Escape, which is perfect for all kinds of parking situations.

The availability of Park Assist 2.0 also adds an automated element to the parking, so it takes all of the stress and strain out of trying to parallel park in tight spots. A Lane-Keeping System, Lane Departure Warning, Evasive Steering Assist, and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Post-Crash Alert System all add to the robust safety features of the 2024 Escape.

Other Safety Features

More passive safety features are also present, from the multiple airbag systems featuring front-seat-mounted airbags with side-impact airbags to the more tech-savvy safety features like the Safety Canopy system that protects those in the rear seats as well. The LATCH system is also standard across the trim line, with lower anchors and tethers for children, as well as two-way manual head restraints. An anti-theft system with a perimeter alarm is also available on select trims to help protect the Escape from any unwanted intruders.
